«il batterista della sua generazione»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “the drummer of his generation”), source
The concert presents Gregory Hutchinson's new album, which celebrates the music of Miles Davis in a personal way, starting from the impulse of the great drummers who accompanied the trumpeter, from Philly Joe to Jimmy Cobb to Tony Williams. The presentation attributes the description «il batterista della sua generazione» (the drummer of his generation) to Jazz Magazine.
The record pairs three original pieces by Hutchinson, «Marley's Mood», «Ellehcem's Time» and «I'm Done», with Davis's repertoire, from his bebop origins in the 1950s to post-bop and the electric era of «Bitches Brew». According to the presentation, he blends tradition and innovation with harmony, bold improvisation and rhythmic clarity.
Hutchinson began his career in the late 1980s and has played and recorded with Roy Hargrove, Betty Carter, Joshua Redman, Dianne Reeves, John Scofield and Ray Brown. He appears on more than 150 recordings and is at ease in bebop, modern jazz, neo-soul and hip-hop-derived grooves.
The lineup in Sala Petrassi includes Gregory Hutchinson on drums, Aaron Parks on piano, Milena Casado on trumpet, Seamus Blake on saxophone and Jasen Weaver on bass.
Sala Petrassi is one of the halls of the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the Roman complex designed by Renzo Piano that has borne the name of Ennio Morricone since 2020. It has 673 seats and hosts several Roma Jazz Festival evenings in November.
