A landlord wants to get rid of the tenants who resist eviction and hires Pedro, a giant slaughterhouse worker nicknamed “the Brute”, to persuade the most stubborn ones by force. The man, however, ends up caught in a web of passions and conflicts, torn between the landlord's young wife and the daughter of one of the tenants.
The official presentation reads the film as a popular melodrama bent into a story of oppression: the lowest become tools of the powerful with naive willingness. The slaughterhouse is not a mere backdrop, because men and animals belong to the same brutal world, and beneath the linear plot lies one of the darkest portraits of Mexican society made by the director.
“El bruto” is Mexican, from 1953, and runs 81 minutes. The cast includes Katy Jurado, Pedro Armendáriz, Andrés Soler, Rosita Arenas and Beatriz Ramos. Both screenings are in the original language with Italian subtitles.
