The visit to the Roman latrine is part of «Archeologia in Comune», the program of guided tours of archaeological areas run by the Sovrintendenza Capitolina. The service page describes it as a 60-minute activity.
The Roman latrine was discovered in autumn 1963, after part of the retaining wall of Piazza di San Pietro in Montorio collapsed. It's one of the rare remains from the Roman era on the top of the Janiculum. It preserves two phases of painting, a geometric mosaic floor in black and white tiles, the channel for wastewater and a small channel for clean water. On the walls you can see drawings and a scratched inscription with crude content.
There are 10 places at most. Inside, the group is split into two teams of five people, who visit the room in turn.
The site is not accessible to people with mobility difficulties, because you go down a flight of stairs. You need comfortable shoes with non-slip soles, you can't step past the chain and you can't touch the frescoes and mosaics.
The meeting point is the church of San Pietro in Montorio, on the Janiculum. On the same square, at number 3, is the Spanish Academy, to which the page on Aunque es de noche is devoted.
In this period the Sovrintendenza Capitolina offers other visits with meeting points in different places, such as the one to the tomb in Largo Talamo and the walk at Porta del Popolo.
