7-14-21-28 is one of the historic titles of the RezzaMastrella pair. It debuted in 2009 at the Teatro Astra in Turin and soon arrived at Vascello, which has been the duo's Roman home ever since. Below you find the full holiday calendar, what you see on stage, who Rezza and Mastrella are, the history of the Monteverde theater, how to get there on December evenings and how to build a year-end evening around the show.

7-14-21-28 at Teatro Vascello: holiday dates and times

7-14-21-28 is staged at Teatro Vascello from December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with 10 performances between Christmas and Epiphany and a special on San Silvestro evening at 21:30. It is the holiday program of the theater's 2026/2027 season in Monteverde.

The calendar day by day

Tuesday 22 and Wednesday December 23 at 21:00. Thursday 24 and Friday December 25 the theater is closed. Saturday December 26 at 19:00, Sunday 27 at 17:00. Monday December 28 at 21:00, a special performance outside the usual Monday rest. Tuesday 29 and Wednesday December 30 at 21:00. Thursday December 31 at 21:30, New Year's special. Friday, January 1 closed. Saturday, January 2 at 19:00 and Sunday, January 3 at 17:00, last performance.

The running time

The show lasts 90 minutes, in a single act, with no intermission. With the 21:30 start on the 31st, the performance ends before midnight: there is time to get out and reach a toast.

The production

7-14-21-28 is a production by La Fabbrica dell'Attore, Teatro Vascello and Rezza Mastrella. La Fabbrica dell'Attore is the company that runs Vascello, so the pair are at home, and entrusting them with the year-end holidays has the flavor of a tradition.

Right after, Metadietro

After the last performance on January 3, Vascello keeps the two artists on the bill with Metadietro, from January 5 to 17, 2027: two shows in a row by the same duo, one historic and one recent, for those who want to compare 15 years of work.

What you see in 7-14-21-28: numbers, ropes and an ideogram

7-14-21-28 sets two numerical civilizations against each other, according to Vascello's presentation text. It is a show about the defeat of meaning, built on Rezza's body and Mastrella's space. The title is a sequence of multiples of seven.

The theme: numbers against words

The official presentation speaks of double-digit ailments that multiply until they startle, and of a subtraction that makes things disappear. On stage the numbers are not a mathematical game. They are the measure of a world that counts everything and no longer understands anything. It is the typical register of the duo, who use the absurd to speak precisely about the present.

The habitat: an ideogram in three dimensions

Mastrella does not sign a set design but a habitat. Vascello's text describes a mobile ideogram, translated into three dimensions: triangular volumes pointing upward that coexist with horizontal lines. Ropes, nets and laces hold the situation up, and only the man moves vertically. For the spectator it means a scene made of physical tensions, to be watched like a sculpture crossed by a body.

The announced ending

The presentation closes with two curt sentences: end of words, beginning of the danse macabre. Those who know Rezza know that words, in his shows, are first consumed and then abandoned. What remains is movement, voice, rhythm.

On stage with Ivan Bellavista

Next to Rezza is Ivan Bellavista, his stage partner for years. With him the duo created Fratto_X in 2012. Lights and technical work are by Alice Mollica, and the creation assistant is Massimo Camilli, who has collaborated with the pair since the 1990 photographic exhibition.

The (never) written text: how Rezza and Mastrella work

On the duo's posters the same formula always appears: habitat by Flavia Mastrella, (never) written by Antonio Rezza. It is a statement of method more than a joke.

Space before the word

In the pair's first shows, in the late 1980s, Rezza performed by pushing his face through slits in colored fabrics created by Mastrella, giving life to a series of characters that lived on facial mime and voice. The principle has remained: first the space is born, then the actor inhabits it and dismantles it.

The 2018 Golden Lion

In July 2018 the Venice Biennale Teatro awarded the duo the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement. The citation, signed by president Paolo Baratta and director Antonio Latella, describes Rezza as the artist who fuses actor and performer in a single body, and Mastrella as the artist who creates habitats and stage spaces that Rezza inhabits and devastates.

Improvisation or score

The (never) written should not be taken literally as free improvisation. The duo's shows tour for years, and 7-14-21-28 has been in the repertoire since 2009. What is missing is a script in the traditional sense. In its place is a physical and vocal score that is refined performance after performance.

Who Antonio Rezza is: biography

Antonio Rezza is an actor, director and writer born in Novara on March 5, 1965, raised in Nettuno, where the family moved in 1967. He worked for 35 years in the spaces of the former Divina Provvidenza in Nettuno, until 2019. Since then he has worked in Anzio.

The beginnings

He attended the theater school directed by Leonardo Bragaglia. In 1985 he performed in Nettuno with Lucida follia by the Compagnia dei Trimurti, the trio formed with Mauro Fratini and Eugenio Bartolini. In 1986, again with Fratini, he staged Ero un fiore stamattina.

Film and television

In the early 1990s Rezza and Mastrella shot a long series of short films awarded at independent film festivals, from Fano to Bellaria, from Bolzano to Torino Cinema Giovani. Their micro-films aired on Rai 3 and Rai 2 in programs such as Blob, Fuori Orario and Pippo Chennedy Show. In 1996 the first feature, Escoriandoli, was presented at the Venice Film Festival, with the participation of Claudia Gerini, Isabella Ferrari, Valentina Cervi and Valeria Golino. For Rai 3 they made Troppolitani, between 1999 and 2000. As an actor Rezza is in Paz! by Renato De Maria and in Musikanten by Franco Battiato.

The novels

Rezza is also a writer. For Bompiani he published Non cogito ergo digito in 1998, Ti squamo in 1999, Son(n)o in 2005 and Credo in un solo oblio in 2007, with which he won the Feronia prize. In 2023 Il fattaccio came out for La Nave di Teseo.

The prizes

Besides the 2018 Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, the pair received the Francesca Alinovi prize in 2007, the Hystrio Altre Muse prize in 2013 and the Ermete Novelli prize in 2017. Rezza also figures among the winners of the Ubu prize.

Who Flavia Mastrella is, the artist of habitats

Flavia Mastrella is the artist and sculptor who since 1987 has formed with Antonio Rezza the duo RezzaMastrella. She signs the habitats, that is the stage spaces in which Rezza performs.

The 1987 meeting

The two met in 1987. The first theater works, Nuove parabole, Barba e cravatta and I vichinghi elettronici, received a good reception from critics. Barba e cravatta was performed in French at the Avignon Festival in 1991.

The exhibitions

In 1990 the pair made the photographic exhibition I Visi...goti at Giovanni Semerano's gallery Il Fotogramma, with ironic simulations of concepts and characters running across Rezza's face. In 2006 the Galleria d'arte moderna in Bologna devoted to the duo the solo show Anamorfosi, brame allo specchio. Mastrella's work crosses theater, sculpture, photography and film.

The theater repertoire

After the first works came Pitecus in 1995, Fotofinish in 2003, Bahamuth in 2006, 7-14-21-28 in 2009, Fratto_X in 2012, Anelante in 2015, Amistade in 2021, Hybris in 2022 and Metadietro in 2025. The first book devoted to the duo, La noia incarnita by Rossella Bonito Oliva, came out in 2012.

A curiosity about 7-14-21-28 by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella at Teatro Vascello, December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027

The most interesting curiosity of 7-14-21-28 concerns its journey. The show was born in 2009, the year the duo began collaborating with the Fondazione Teatro Piemonte Europa, and debuted at the Teatro Astra in Turin. It then moved to the Out Off in Milan and arrived at Vascello. In June 2011 it was presented at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, within the Face à Face festival devoted to the Italian scene. A work that plays with numbers and gives up words travels well. The French audience sees the same thing as the Roman audience, a body thrashing among ropes and triangles. A second curiosity concerns the title. Seven, 14, 21, 28: they are the days of a month divided into weeks, or the first multiples of seven, or the steps of a countdown. Vascello's presentation speaks of numerical civilizations in confrontation and does not solve the riddle. It is best to enter the hall without trying to solve it. A third curiosity is a calendar one. The duo has a long link with the holidays at Vascello: already in December 2010 Rezza and Mastrella performed for an entire month, in the spaces of the Monteverde theater, the complete anthology of their theater. Returning in December, 16 years later, with one of the titles of that season has the flavor of an undeclared anniversary.

Teatro Vascello: the Monteverde hall

Teatro Vascello opened on May 4, 1989 on Via Giacinto Carini, founded by Giancarlo Nanni and Manuela Kustermann with the company La Fabbrica dell'Attore. Today it is one of the reference halls of contemporary theater in Rome.

The origins at Teatro La Fede

Before Vascello there was Teatro La Fede, on Via Portuense 78, in the 1970s the seat of the group Space Re(v)action. There Nanni and Kustermann made shows such as A come Alice and Risveglio di primavera, within what was called the Roman school: a theater that favored image over word. It is a genealogy that explains well why Rezza and Mastrella found their home here.

Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione

Since 1998 the Ministry has recognized La Fabbrica dell'Attore as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione. In 2004 the Sala Studio opened, on the basement floor. After Nanni's death, in January 2010, the artistic direction has been Manuela Kustermann's.

A season of research

The 2026/2027 program opened in autumn with titles such as Tragudia, Il canto di Edipo by Alessandro Serra and L'orologio americano by Elio De Capitani. The holidays with Rezza and Mastrella are the passage from the first to the second half of the season.

Something nobody tells you about 7-14-21-28 by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella at Teatro Vascello, December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027

What is rarely said about a Rezza show is that it is a physical experience even for those watching. 90 minutes without intermission, an actor who runs, jumps, clings to ropes, speaks at very high speed and then stops speaking: the hall follows out of breath. It is not reclined-armchair theater. Those arriving tired from a family dinner on the 26th or 27th of December should know it, and perhaps choose a midweek performance. The second thing concerns the audience. Rezza's evenings at Vascello have a devoted audience, who know the lines and react in advance. First-timers may feel a bit out of the chorus. It is not a problem: the duo's language does not ask for preparation, it only asks for willingness to let go of the plot. The third thing is practical. The holidays in Rome change public transport hours, in particular on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. The theater is closed on three of those days, but the special on the 31st falls on an evening when services may have reduced hours or variations. Those choosing San Silvestro at Vascello do well to check in advance on the ATAC journey planner how to get home after midnight, or to arrange a taxi.

Tickets for 7-14-21-28 at Vascello

Tickets for 7-14-21-28 are bought on the official Teatro Vascello website, which links to the authorized presale network, or at the theater's box office at Via Giacinto Carini 78.

Online and at the box office

Vascello's website lets you buy tickets, subscriptions and cards directly on your phone, without going through the box office. Those who prefer direct contact can go to the theater's box office on opening days.

The season cards

The theater offers cards for the 2026/2027 season, to be bought at least 24 hours before first use. The website advises booking the seat and checking availability. Those planning to see both 7-14-21-28 and Metadietro do well to consider them.

The December 31 special

The San Silvestro performance at 21:30 is by definition the most requested. Conditions and prices for the special are those given by the theater on its official channels. It is best to check them in good time.

The advice I give you for visiting 7-14-21-28 by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella at Teatro Vascello, December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027

My advice is to choose the performance according to the evening you want to spend, not just according to the calendar. Those looking for a different New Year's Eve have the special on the 31st at 21:30. You leave shortly before midnight, and in Monteverde and Trastevere there is no shortage of places to toast, as long as they are booked. Those who want the show in its most concentrated form choose a weeknight, the 22nd, 23rd, 29th or 30th of December, when the city is on pause and the audience is made up of enthusiasts. Those with guests at home during the holidays and looking for an outing different from the usual cinema can aim at the matinee on Sunday, December 27 or Sunday, January 3 at 17:00: you come out as darkness has just fallen and there is time for dinner in Trastevere. In our judgment the special performance on Monday, December 28 is the most interesting: it falls on a day that is usually empty in Roman programs and attracts those who are truly curious. On the seat in the hall, a central row not too close is best: Mastrella's habitat is a structure that develops in height, with triangular volumes pointing upward, and must be seen in its entirety. Finally, a suggestion for those who have never seen Rezza: do not try to understand everything at once. The meaning arrives by accumulation, and often afterward, on the way home.

How to get to Teatro Vascello on December evenings

Teatro Vascello is at Via Giacinto Carini 78, in Monteverde Vecchio, and is reached by bus 75, which stops in front of the entrance.

By bus

The 75 leaves from Termini and passes the Colosseum and Piramide. For those coming from the center it is the most direct line. The theater also lists lines 44, 710, 870 and 871 as useful, which link Monteverde with Trastevere and the neighborhoods to the west. On holidays frequencies change, so the ATAC journey planner gives the updated schedule.

By train

From Ostiense station the train takes you to Quattro Venti station, on Viale dei Quattro Venti, a few steps from the theater. It is the fastest solution for those arriving with metro B, which at Piramide connects with Ostiense.

By car

The theater suggests parking along Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, about 100 meters away. There are paid car parks at Via Giacinto Carini 43, at Via Maurizio Quadrio 22, partnered with the theater when you show the ticket, and at Via Raffaello Giovagnoli 20.

On San Silvestro evening

For the special on the 31st it is best to decide beforehand how to get back. Transport networks on New Year's night follow special schedules, announced each year by the transport company. A booked taxi or a car parked in one of the garages indicated by the theater are the calmest solutions.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

That Antonio Rezza is a theater actor everyone knows. Less remembered is how much film and television counted in shaping his language. In the 1990s the duo's micro-films aired within Blob and Fuori Orario, two Rai 3 programs tied to Enrico Ghezzi, who in autumn 2000 devoted an entire night of Fuori Orario to Rezza and Mastrella, repeating it in October 2002. The broken rhythm, the lightning character changes, the taste for the fragment that you see in 7-14-21-28 also come from there, from television and film editing. A second fact known to enthusiasts and little told concerns music. In 2010 the duo took Pitecus to theaters such as the Smeraldo in Milan, the Auditorium della Conciliazione in Rome and the Petruzzelli in Bari, with some performances together with the Afterhours. In 2013 it joined the itinerant festival Hai paura del buio?, promoted by the same band, alongside musicians, writers and actors. In 2011 Rezza recorded with Caparezza the song Arbeit Macht Frei. Rezza's audience is not only that of experimental theater. It is also that of Italian rock. A third fact concerns the written word. Rezza, who destroys the word on stage, is the author of five novels, four with Bompiani and one with La Nave di Teseo, and with one of these he won the Feronia prize in 2008.

Monteverde Vecchio around Teatro Vascello

Monteverde Vecchio is the upper, residential part of Monteverde, above Trastevere, between the Gianicolo and the great historic villas. In December it is a quiet neighborhood, with holiday lights in the shopping streets.

The Gianicolo

The Janiculum Hill is a few minutes away. The view over Rome on late December afternoons, with the early sunset and the crisp air, is the best way to prepare for an evening performance or to end a matinee.

The villas

Villa Sciarra, intimate and full of fountains, and Villa Doria Pamphilj, the great park west of the neighborhood, are the two green stops of the area. In winter the gates close early, so it is best to check the hours.

The Fontanone and San Pancrazio

Climbing toward the hill you reach the Acqua Paola Fountain and, a little farther, the basilica of San Pancrazio: two easy stops before the Sunday matinee.

Trastevere

At the foot of Monteverde opens Trastevere, which during the holidays is the liveliest district on the right bank of the Tiber. It is the area to head down to after the show.

The right photo to take at 7-14-21-28 by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella at Teatro Vascello, December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027

No photos during the show: in a work built on the moving body and on Alice Mollica's lights, a lit screen breaks the tension for the whole row, and an actor jumping among ropes and nets needs darkness around. The right photo is taken before and after. The first is Vascello's facade on Via Giacinto Carini with the poster of 7-14-21-28: in December, with the holiday lights in the neighborhood, it has a different air from the rest of the year. The second is taken at the Gianicolo, before the Sunday matinee: Rome from above with the domes lighting up in the late winter afternoon. The third is for lovers of theater details. The program sheet and the poster carry the formula (never) written by Antonio Rezza, which is worth a photo on its own: it is the shortest way to explain to a friend what you saw. Those choosing the special on the 31st have one more occasion: the ticket with the San Silvestro date, photographed next to the program, becomes the souvenir of a New Year's Eve spent at the theater. A rule that always applies: no flash and no video, even during the applause, unless the theater indicates otherwise.

Where to eat before or after 7-14-21-28

Teatro Vascello has an interior bistro, the Coffee Plant Bistrot, useful for a coffee or a snack before the show.

In Monteverde

The neighborhood has trattorias and pizzerias frequented mostly by residents, with fairer prices than those of Trastevere. During the holidays many places change their opening days, so check beforehand, especially on December 26 and January 1.

In Trastevere

After the Saturday 19:00 and Sunday 17:00 performances it is worth heading down to Trastevere, where osterias and trattorias stay open late. In December the district fills up early, so booking is essential.

San Silvestro dinner

With the show at 21:30, the dinner on the evening of the 31st must be moved earlier or shifted to after midnight. Many places offer fixed menus by reservation that evening. It is a choice to make well in advance.

Some important events that took place here in history

The history of Teatro Vascello is told through events. On May 4, 1989 the hall opened with Qui non ci torno più by Tadeusz Kantor and the Cricot Theater of Warsaw: a statement of intent, since Kantor was one of the most radical names on the European stage. In the early 1990s Raul Ruiz, the Pontedera research center and American and French contemporary dance passed through. In May 1996 the series Extraordinario presented 16 young companies from all over Italy. In 1998 the Ministry recognized La Fabbrica dell'Attore as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione, and in the same year Vascello co-produced a show with the Berliner Ensemble. In spring 2001 the co-founder Giancarlo Nanni was the first Italian invited to work and teach at the Actors Studio in New York. In 2003 the Premio Valentino Zeichen devoted to poetry was born, and in 2004 the Sala Studio opened. After the 2009 Turin debut, 7-14-21-28 landed at Vascello too. In December 2010, the same year as Nanni's death, the theater hosted for an entire month the complete anthology of Rezza and Mastrella's theater: an event that tied the duo to this hall forever. For over 20 years, every autumn, the Fondazione Romaeuropa has brought a part of its festival to Vascello. The 2026 holidays, with the return of 7-14-21-28, add to this history.

Accessibility, young people and practical information

Teatro Vascello publishes on its website a section devoted to accessibility, to be consulted before buying to learn about access, reserved seats and services.

With young people

7-14-21-28 suits teenagers from high school up who love physical theater, surreal comedy and unconventional languages. The presentation text contains strong expressions and the register of the show is the irreverent one of the duo. It is not designed for children.

Punctuality

The show is a single act, with no intermission: entering late disturbs the whole hall. On holiday evenings traffic around Trastevere and Monteverde is unpredictable, so it is best to leave with margin.

The period

Between Christmas and Epiphany Rome changes pace: offices closed, the city full of visitors, lights and nativity scenes in the churches. For those planning the holidays in the city there are the proposals for Christmas in Rome and New Year's Eve in Rome, to combine with an evening at Vascello.

Who has passed through 7-14-21-28 by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella at Teatro Vascello, December 22, 2026 to January 3, 2027

On Vascello's stage and, before that, in the history of the company that founded it, some of the most important names of contemporary theater have passed. At Teatro La Fede, the first seat in the 1970s, came the saxophonist Steve Lacy, the composer John Cage, the French director Gérard Gelas and the Living Theatre. From the group came Memè Perlini and Giuliano Vasilicò. At Vascello, since 1989, have passed Tadeusz Kantor with the Cricot, Raul Ruiz, the Pontedera center, Teatri Uniti, Moni Ovadia, Carlo Cecchi, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, the Societas Raffaello Sanzio, the Teatro Valdoca and Pippo Delbono. For dance Enzo Cosimi, Sosta Palmizi, Virgilio Sieni and Wim Vandekeybus. Among the international masters Bob Wilson and Peter Brook, who presented here Beckett's Happy Days with Natasha Parry. Manuela Kustermann, actress and artistic director, is the constant presence of this history. Among the house regulars is also Massimo Verdastro, who has acted and directed at Vascello several times, from 1993 to the Satyricon of 2012. And of course Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella, who presented here in 2010 the entire anthology of their theater and who return every season. From December 22 to January 3 Ivan Bellavista, Massimo Camilli, Alice Mollica and the technical and organizational team coordinated by Stefania Saltarelli pass through with them, together with the holiday audience, which has its own loyalty in these halls.

The final advice on 7-14-21-28 at Teatro Vascello

The holidays at the theater in Rome are often synonymous with light comedy. Vascello chooses the opposite road and entrusts the turn of the year to the most irregular theater of the Italian scene. In our judgment it is a choice to reward. 7-14-21-28 is a show that has toured Europe, that does not age because it does not lean on a script, and that in 90 minutes gives more energy than a party night. The advice is clear: the special performance of December 28 for those who want the hall of enthusiasts, the special of the 31st for those seeking an unconventional New Year's Eve, Sunday, January 3 for those who then want to come back in January and see Metadietro too. In any case it is best to book early.
